Reflections

Reflections I spent a Saturday morning with a cousin at my grandma's house. We looked through old photos and reminisced about our childhood and the times we spent at Mama's house. The house burnt down in the 80s, and a new house was built on the family's land. As we reminisced and viewed the photographs, I couldn’t help but remember all of the childhood memories of family, summers, and holidays spent with family.

My dad was the sibling of 19 brothers and sisters, but I only had the privilege of meeting 15 of his siblings, with only 3 of his sisters remaining. I was called by my cousin to do a closet clean-out of some of my uncle’s clothing and shoes. I picked up a set of dishes that were my aunt’s and several family photos.

Running a vintage boutique allows me time to reflect a lot as I look over items in the store and what to display at any given time. This month, in February, brings me closer to family and heritage, since we promote Black History during February. This month, we will celebrate with a Soul Food feast, along with the fashions worn by our people during our upbringing in the 60s and 70s.

Remembering our past is what keeps us humble and appreciative of what our ancestors sacrificed for us to be in a better place than what they were afforded. I am truly grateful for all of my ancestors and relatives who made my dreams a reality.
